Ofcourse. Semantics (and hashing out exactly why one word exists, when another also seems to say the same thing) is my favorite hobby!! So, according to Dr. Semantics (ME), the difference is:
'Jinns' differ from ghosts (or in desi vernacular would be 'aatma') because Jinns are not dead spirits, because they were never alive. Jinns exist in a parallel spiritual realm that Muslims believe exists simultaneously (somewhat parallel) to the earthly physical plane. Apparently, whereas we are limited, inhabitants of the other plane can see and sense us. Those of us who are more spiritually aware (sixth sense et al) seem to be able to sense the other realm as well.
Incidentally, I believe that when humans die, we transcend the plane and become 'ghosts', 'aatmas' etc etc while we wait for-whatever-it-is-that-is-supposed-to-come and we exist in the spiritual realm.
Also, feel free to disregard everything I've just said if you want, the above is only my (somewhat limited) understanding of the phenomenon.
Ubaid: NO. That's a huge generalization, and I don't quite agree.
Xeb: Hm. I don't disagree, quite the opposite, in fact. But I don't completely agree either =P Lol. I don't exactly know what or how or why, so don't ask me what I think =P
And I searched up on Jins a looooooong time back & what Xeb says is exactly what I have read. They're like us. They have a world of their own. Another being. They can se us but we cannot see them. They're pretty much the same as we are.
I think ghosts are more of a fantasized version of Jinns and/or 'Roohs'. It's an English word, and was probably invented based on what people saw Jinns or spirits as. Jinns do exist though, and they're made of fire, and we also know that angels are made of light. But I don't know exactly what a ghost is. I also think it's what you get when a person dies. The soul or spirit or whatever.
Oh and Shaytaan/Iblees is a jinn but there are good jinns and bad jinns, just like good humans and bad humans.
